When You Need A Helping Hand

Our clients are often people who “fall in the gap” between the medical system and the fitness system.

They usually have some problem or barrier that keeps them from training or performing the way they want to but it’s not quite bad enough to go to a doctor or a therapist.  It might be shoulder pain or, knee pain or some other area of the body or, sometimes it’s just not quite understanding what to do and how to do it.

And this barrier is usually too mild for the medical system to handle yet too difficult for the fitness professional to handle. And to make my point, read what Austin Gregory Johns, CCS, President, San Clemente Health & Fitness Network had to say:

“Too often personal trainers like to use rehabilitative techniques in some sort of pseudo-physical therapy routine. Our job as trainers is not to examine or reconstruct localized portions of the body, but rather improve the functionality of all bodily systems as a whole. If that is not possible due to an injury or other problem, the professional must refer the client to someone qualified to help.” - source, IDEA Fitness Journal, October 2011

But therein lies the problem. If you have knee pain due to arthritic changes in the joint, you can’t just globally improve “functionality of all bodily systems”. Your knee will be the weak link. That’s like saying when you have a flat tire on your car, you can just learn how to drive it as best as you can.

A Master Fusion Coach just might be your answer.

How We’re Different from Trainers and Strength Coaches

A Master Fusion Coach has a unique skill set. Because we’re trained as physical therapists, we understand disease and injury; how the human body works; how injured tissue heals and what it needs to speed healing; the subtle interplay between body parts – how weakness in one area can cause problems in another; how to use movement to improve overall function and strength without creating another injury.

And we understand the power of the mind-body connection – what you think is what you say; what you say is what you do; what you do is what you get. We help you sort out how you might be limiting your return to an active, vibrant life just by what you’re thinking about your situation.

Personal trainers and strength coaches have no training in disease, pathology, or surgery.

Personal trainers and strength coaches have no training in mechanobiology – how the application of exercise influences tissue (muscle, tendon, bone, etc).

Personal trainers and strength coaches have no training in decoding the language of your story; how to interpret things like stiffness, aching, burning.

But we do.

“One summer not too long ago, I tore my left rotator cuff. I worked with Christine Springer, a charming, intelligent, extraordinary physical therapist [and coach]. Christine developed an exercise plan that enabled me to avoid surgery. I have regained 90% of my flexibility and have dramatically strengthened my core. Thanks to Christine, at age 73, I feel like I am 30 again (well, maybe 40).” – Frank F.

So imagine a Coach who not only understand the essentials of strengthening, fat loss, flexibility, balance, power, speed but then also knows disease, injury, surgeries, biomechanics, tissue healing, and understands what you’re saying AND knows how to help you.

How great would that be?

What to Expect

Every Fusion client has a custom built program based on the findings of our Initial Consultation.

The process is segmented into three main components:

  1. The Initial Consultation
  2. Training Process
  3. Follow Up Consultations

The Initial Consultation

You’ll begin by filling out a New Client Registration Packet. We’ll email the form to you and you can complete this questionnaire prior to your visit. Save yourself time and bring it along with you when you come in for your consultation.

Your initial consultation will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes and will consist of three parts: an interview, examination and summary.

Part One: The Interview

During the interview, we uncover and learn about the nature of your problem (s) and the purpose of your visit. We most commonly ask:

  • what you need or want from us.
  • about your prior medical history, injuries, and any treatments you may have had.
  • how we can help you, how your current problem started, and how it specifically limits you.
  • special questions that help us understand the type of injury (if you have had one) you may have sustained including the nature and characteristics of your symptoms.
  • your occupation and daily physical demands.
  • to describe your typical exercise routine.
  • what you would like to accomplish as a Fusion client (and we’ll ask you to fill out a Goal Map for us so we can better understand what you’re trying to accomplish and why).

Part Two: The Examination

The purpose of the examination is to identify the exact nature of your problem. We will evaluate your condition, record the results and use this information for planning and as a marker to measure your future improvements.

Part Three: The Summary

It’s important for you know your exact situation and what options are available to you. The initial consultation concludes with a summary that will determine if we can help you or if you need the services of another professional.

If we believe we can help you, we’ll design a custom regiment for you, teach you everything you need to know, make sure you know what to do and how to do it.

Don’t settle for a lifetime of inactivity. Let us help you rebuild your own natural body armor for the active lifestyle your want to live.

Training

Our training programs are highly structured, prescriptive training routines designed to:

  • Precisely challenge your body using specific drills and exercises to promote healing and restoration.
  • Accurately dose your program to maximize tissue healing and recovery.
  • Coach you on how to maintain your improvements for a lifetime.

A typical training program starts with one session every three to four weeks (if we believe you need more frequent visits than that, we’ll discuss this with you and explain why). Each client must also join the Fusion online membership. Being a Fusion member makes life easier for you and your coach. You’ll have access to nearly 200 instructional drill videos and other content that will make your program much easier to implement for for you to learn.

The Follow Up Consultations

At regular intervals — generally every four to six weeks — we sit down with you (or have a Skype session) to review your progress. These meetings are shorter and more focused than the initial consultation.

During your initial consultation, we will have set specific physical markers and success indicators. We’ll review these with you during the follow up consultation, and determine if your progress is on target. If not, we’ll adjust your training and assignments to get you back on track.

How is Fusion Coaching Different from Physical Therapy?

We are not offering nor supplying physical therapy services. If we think you need to see a physical therapist, be more closely supervised than what our consulting service can offer, we’ll tell you.

Physical therapy is a licensed health care profession that has certain rules and regulations provided by individual states, in our case, Texas. One of those rules is an individual cannot offer physical therapy services without being a licensed physical therapist. And, once those services are offered, another set of rules and regulations must be followed. Things like how long you can work with a patient, how often a patient must be re-evaluated, how long a patient can be treated, etc.

Now, the truth is, personal trainers and other practitioners work with clients who have low back pain or knee pain or shoulder pain and actually use many of the same procedures that are used by a physical therapist. So why isn’t this considered physical therapy?

Because it’s not offered as physical therapy.

So, just to be clear, our services our performance training consultative services, not physical therapy, and are not reimbursable by third party health insurance. So please don’t ask us to file a health insurance claim for you. We don’t do that.
